The "Volunteer CEO": From Hedge Fund to Hospice - A Very Personal Journey

DALLAS – SilverStone Hospice recognizes its surprising roots and celebrates the humble new beginnings of its CEO, Alfonso Montiel. It’s a story that exemplifies how giving of yourself is not only self-rewarding but also can change a life forever. At the age of 50, Montiel left behind a “safer path” because his own very personal experience as a hospice volunteer tugged at his heart and would not let go.

Responding to what he believed to be his true calling, Montiel purchased a decade-old hospice company, moved the headquarters to the Dallas Medical District, brought an entire new team on board, and founded SilverStone Hospice, where he often says he serves as the “Volunteer CEO.” He has a good heart, a sharp business mind, and an entrepreneurial spirit, all of which led him toward “re-starting” SilverStone with a unique approach: he primarily hires volunteers to join the company. He believes if they’re willing to volunteer, they must love it for the right reasons, and that’s the kind of employees he wants.

“Volunteering with my first patient is something I will never forget. It led me to saying, ‘I want to do it again.’ Then after few times I said, ‘I want to do it forever.’ That’s when I thought about buying a hospice company,” says Montiel. “That’s why I called myself a volunteer CEO, because it became part of who I am.”

Montiel was once a multi-million-dollar hedge fund founder and Fortune 500 business strategist who has shaken hands with every living United States President, who knows Nobel Prize winners on a personal basis, whose last job included working in Syrian refugee camps in Northern Iraq, having conversations with H.M. The Queen, and discussing the refugee crisis with the UK Prime Minister. Yet, he runs a Dallas hospice company in the name of compassion and volunteering.

Montiel’s first hospice experience as a volunteer was a very personal one. When a family member in his native Venezuela became ill and he was unable to be there to care for him, he sought out another way to do something meaningful through hospice volunteerism locally. Then in 2019, he took the plunge and left behind a traditional career path to be involved in hospice full time – and now, he feels fulfilled in a way he never did before. Although he runs the company as its CEO, he maintains his volunteer mentality of being “called to care” for each of his patients as they reach the end of their lives.

The feedback from Montiel’s peers in the hospice industry, who almost always compliment his business approach, gives Montiel the encouragement to continue striving for better. He will tell you his model is simple: “We do the right thing because it’s the right thing to do. I care about serving my patients more than I care about bottom-line. Compared to my previous business experiences, it’s a completely different mindset when it comes to serving others and providing comfort at such an important time in people’s lives. And please don’t read me wrong, I’m here to grow a business that in a relatively short time should impact thousands of people. No one can do what we can, and I love that bias.”

Under Montiel’s guidance from business and heart, SilverStone Hospice ensures patients are treated with respect and dignity in the environment they choose to call home. The company continues to expand its service offerings, including advanced illness care programs and palliative medicine, to meet the growing needs of the patients it serves. With SilverStone’s No One Dies Alone program, its team members support patients and families during their final hour. This team is always accessible even in the most challenging times. Moreover, they are fully trained, skilled, and confident to support, empathize, and guide patients and families through grief and loss. SilverStone’s top priorities are the emotional, physical, social, and spiritual needs of their clients.
