Middle-grade novel imagines a world without school violence. But at what cost?

Erin M. Spaulding, author of children’s books “Eden’s New Friend” and “Eden Visits the Orchard”, has published her first novel for middle-grade readers – “It’s Time For Change.”

In her new novel, Spaulding draws inspiration from recent school shootings. The year is 2052. Amy Williams and her best friends Steve and Lucas are getting ready for the evaluation period. How these three sixth-graders perform during these two weeks of tests will determine the courses they will take in high school and the profession they will hold for the rest of their lives.

The director of the school that Amy, Steve, and Lucas attend is Virginia Wilkes. Twenty years earlier, Wilkes lost her daughter Annie in an incident of school violence led by some students who felt they did not fit in at a prestigious private school. Wilkes used this loss and became a leader in education reform, establishing the organization Parents Against Student Induced Violence.

Wilkes and her organization helped spur legislation that reformed public and private secondary schools. Under these reforms, students are sent to one of three types of high schools: specializing in the arts, science, and math, or a military school for competitive athletes.

But is this structure too rigid? And will Amy, Steve, and Lucas get separated and sent to different schools?

Spaulding’s first novel for middle-graders is now available at amazon.com in paperback and Kindle editions. Copies signed by the author are available at erinspaulding.com.

Born in Boston, Spaulding is an author, educator, and entrepreneur. Her website’s slogan is “Read to Succeed.” In her thirties, Spaulding went back to college and earned her degree, where her good grades led to her induction into the Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society.

“I was born in a small suburb of Boston in the early ‘70s to a working class family,” Spaulding writes on her website. “My father raised us to have a strong work ethic and to understand that you get out of life what you put into it.”

In 1997 she met and married “a wonderful man who held the same philosophy about hard work.” Spaulding and her husband have three children, to whom they pass along their work ethic.

Spaulding is the author of two children’s books (also available on amazon.com) — “Eden’s New Friend” and “Eden Visits the Orchard.” She has several children’s books in the works. She also plans a book chronicling her struggle with Celiac disease.
