Bestselling author Katherine Sheldon merged two passions into big business

January 06 21:08 2022
Now, having experienced the challenges of entrepreneurial growth, she launched a growth coaching practice to help other women succeed.

“I always loved the idea of being in business for myself,” says entrepreneur Katherine Sheldon, “the idea that when you own your own business, it can really be limitless.” What she didn’t think about, at first, was what type of business she would start. But when she reflected on her 12 years in healthcare management, providig services for children with autism or other mental health and behavioral challenges, she quickly recognized that she did not want to leave that world behind.

For two years, she did both: She continued to work as a supervisor within New Jersey’s Children’s System of Care while starting her own company, Prasada In Home, a therapeutic and behavioral health staffing agency, until she had grown her company enough to leave her other job. “When I left, I was actually able to partner with them and they’re still my biggest referral source. It’s great because we all know when you’re building a business so much of it is about relationships. So I was fortunate to really be able to meld both my passions: running a successful business and then continuing to help kids with behavioral and health challenges.”

Now that Prasada In Home is celebrating its fifth year in business, Kathy is ready to give back. “Going through the startup phase of a business tends to be easy, as scary as it is,” she says. “But when you get to that second, third, and fourth year, that’s when it gets the most challenging.” Her particular challenges included launching some programming that didn’t work the way she’d expected and having to come up with a Plan B.

Kathy’s biggest message to her coaching clients is: Absolutely never give up! And don’t go into entrepreneurship thinking you’ll give it a year and then go back to Corporate America. “It takes more than a year,” she says. It takes more than three years.” So don’t quit, because the momentum might be just around the corner.

You can read more of Katherine Sheldon’s story, including her advice for parents whose kids have been struggling during the Covid pandemic, in the inspiring new book Women Who Boss Up Post-Pandemic, by Tam Luc, the author, educator, and podcaster dedicated to helping women “boss up.” The book collects 16 interviews with women who are side hustlers and multitaskers, who faced the uncertainties of the Covid pandemic—and other obstacles—by embracing their strengths and finding their authentic paths. They have so much to share and to teach, and while every story is unique, there is creativity and perseverance at the core of each one.
